13. A Tiny Home Of Their Own: Dollhouses For Kids

Dollhouses with their miniature furniture and beautiful kitchen sets are any girl’s favorite toy. There are some differences in the dollhouses that are available for adults and for kids. A kids’ dollhouse kit consists of simple units that are made with hard plastic most of the times. This design is simple and mainly is meant for playing. On the other hand, the dollhouses for adults are serious business and mostly for collectors, hobbyists and those who just do not get enough of being creative. Dollhouse kits for adults are quite fancy and sometimes include electrical systems and other mechanisms built in for the complete effect.
Doll houses can also be categorized based on their construction styles and can be classified as:
Tudor: This dollhouse with its traditional look consists of wooden beams, roofs and often comes with glass windows. This style is well suited for smaller as well as bigger sets. It takes some time and patience to design these dollhouses. But these are one of the few famous dollhouses around.
Victorian: These are the famous models that we are reminded of when we talk about dollhouses. The model is simple and easy to construct. The colorful roofs and elegant windows are the eye catching aspects of the Victorian dollhouses.
Colonial: It’s the most loved dollhouse model of the Americans. It has a stunning appearance mostly with multiple levels. It’s easy to construct and leaves a lot of scope for applying your creativity. Colonial style dollhouse kits are freely available in many stores. All you have to do is choose the best model and construct your dream dollhouse.
Lighthouses: As the name indicates, it gives your dollhouse a marine touch. These kits are also freely available and its simple design makes construction easy. It gives an option for kids and adults to design the interiors unlike some other models of dollhouses.
In addition to these, the dollhouses can be further divided into two main categories based on the type of construction. The two different models of dollhouses based on construction techniques are:
Tab and slot or Die cut
Glue and nails
Tab and slot model is the traditional dollhouse which looks perfect and realistic. The plywood used in these dollhouses makes them appear closer to a real house. Generally these dollhouses are two dimensional and require a lot a lamination work to carve them to perfection. On the other hand, glue and nails type of dollhouse construction is widely used these days. There are three dimensional dollhouses and are easy to construct. These dollhouse kits are easily available in market as compared to the tab and slot models and are better suited for children.
